Poems about the Catholic Church in America

COLONIST PEDRO MENEDEZ DE AVILES

In 15-hundred-65 there was an expedition

With Pedro Menendez de Aviles to lead the mission

In Florida he started Saint Au-GUS-tine as a colony

On August 28th, Augustine’s feast

That convert-Saint who sinful ways would cease

When God through Ambrose, and the Word, said, “Follow me!”

MISSIONARIES JUAN DE PADILLA, EUSEBIO KINO, JUNIPERO SERRA, SEBASTIEN RALE, FR. STEPHEN BADEN, FR. GABRIEL RICHARD

*

Señor Padilla, first of martyrs in the borders of this land

In 15-hundred-42, he died in present Kansas

Euseb’io Kino spread the faith in rural Arizona

While Junipero* did the same in sunny California!

The French Sebastien Rale brought the saving news to Maine

And nearly all the Abenaki tribe to Jesus came!

In 17-hundred-93 went Baden to Kentuck’ to preach

And five years later Ri-chard went to Michigan, lost souls to reach

*St. Junipero Serra

MISCELLANEOUS FACTS

*
The Cath’lics early on were found in Maryland and Virginia

And don’t forget New York and in addition, Pennsylvania

The Dioceses Post-Baltimore (post-Noah and the ark)

Were Boston, Philly, Bardstown plus illustrious New York

Ol’ Maryland got its charter dated 1632
‘Twas named after Marie, the wife that Charles the 1st pursued

Two “Acts of Toleration” let folks worship God divine,

In Maryland in years 1639 and 49
Year 17-hundred-27 brought the Ursulines

The first of schools for girls they founded deep in New Orleans

The great “Quebec Act” let Canadian English Catholics practice

In 17-hundred-74! Yes, that for sure, the fact is!

*
BISHOP JOHN CARROLL (FIRST US DIOCESAN BISHOP) APPROVES ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON’S RELIGIOUS ORDER

*

In 18-hundred-12 our country with Great Britain went to war

And Seton’s rule Carroll approved that year; great things in store!

*
THE TRICKY TROUBLE OF TRUSTEEISM

*

New York in 17-hundred-80’s first saw “trusteeism”

And 40 years anon in Philly came the Hogan Schism

Then Bishop England hailed from Ireland (names that bring confusion)

In 1823 his diocese tamed wild trusteeism

His constitution gave the bishop power to choose his priests

And to approve the motions of trustees; this brought him peace!
