At least once a year
Go on Retreat
A time to rest in the Shepherd’s Arms
A time to hear your Beloved call you His Beloved
A time to fall in love again
A time for receiving, not giving
A time for “Ora”, not “Labora”
A time for listening, not speaking
A time to be filled, not to be poured
A time for being, not doing
A time to “BE”
A time to “be still and know that God is God” (and you are not)
A time for receiving the Sap of the Spirit as a branch on Christ the Vine
A time to be pruned by the Vinedresser, through solitude, silence, scripture, sacraments, and spiritual direction
A time of “Marian receptivity”, not “Marthian activity”
So treat your body, treat your mind, treat your soul…
Go on retreat

*Hey! What’s God like, if there’s a God?
Please, may I ask and seek and prod?
My knowledge of such things ain’t broad
What IS God like, if there’s a God?
*Is God just some “old bearded man?”
Some being without a will or plan?
Should God be called, “the man upstairs”?
That does NOT sound like one who cares!
*Is God a faceless, nameless force?
Impersonal and passive source?
A “universe” that doesn’t care?
If God’s like that, I might despair!
*Is God a cosmic Santa Claus
Who makes a list and checks it ’cause
He won’t reward the naughty sheep
But favors those his rules will keep?
*Is God a lofty debutante
Who says, “Do anything you want!”
Who doesn’t urge a holy life
And laughs as folks encounter strife?
*Is God a tyrant full of wrath
Who- like a hawk- observes our path
Who hopes to catch us in some sin
To smite us, fright us, do us in?
*Hey! What’s God like? My plea don’t shun
For, answers I’ve discovered none!
The answer’s in the Son God gave:
The One who died then fled the grave
(Ask Jesus to prove to you that He’s real, and keep on asking, and keep on trying to love Him. You will not be disappointed! “And my Father will love him who loves me. I will love him and will show myself to him.” -John 14:21)

The hope that Christ offers is like cantelope [Ephesians 5:2; Psalm 19:10]
It’s sweet! Plus refreshing like icy mint Scope
The horoscope’s bunk! You’re at end of your rope?
Meet Christ in His Word! He’s your true Philanthrope [1 Peter 1:3-6]To blossom your hope is the hope of this trope:
A heart cleansed with hope’s like a dish cleansed with soap
Please “never say never”! There’s ALWAYS a hope [Colossians 1:27]
Why else would God give us so hopeful a Pope? The devil’s fat lies grease hell’s slippery slope [John 8:44]
He leads you to think you’re a hopeless, dumb dope
Repel him! Compel him to hell: tell him, “Nope!” [James 4:7]
“At baptism, God with my soul did elope!” [2 Corinthians 11:2]If tempted to gossip, to lust, or to “tope” [drink to excess]
Cry, “Christ be my light!”; in the dark you’ll not grope [John 8:12]
He’ll help you to thrive, friend! not merely to cope [John 10:10]
He’ll sprint to you – “Hark!” – like a young antelope [cf. Song of Songs][A prayer for Star Wars fans: “Help me Jesus Christ my Savior; You’re my only Hope!” May Carrie Fisher rest in peace and rise in glory]

Our God can only count to one”
And YOU my brother are “the one”
And YOU my sister are “the one
Since God can only count to oneWhen God looks down upon His Earth
The God who gave you Second Birth [John 3]
God has no measure of YOUR worth [Isaiah 43:4]
As God looks down upon His Earth
God planned before he started time [Ephesians 1]
Before he formed man from the slime [Genesis]
To share with YOU His life divine
And let YOU spread His love sublime [John 15:12]Yes! Christ can only count to one
And YOU’RE, to Christ, “the only one”
No need to prove that you’re “someone”
Ask Christ to be YOUR “only One”! [Revelation 3:20] -
Jesus taught his disciples a lesson they’d never forget
A jaw-dropping lesson
A perspective-widening lesson
A faith-building lesson
This lesson is for modern-day disciples, too
Jesus said something amazing
Not to Peter, not to James, not to John
But to a pagan, a non-Jew
Not just any pagan, but a Canaanite pagan
A descendant of the ancient enemies of the Jews
He said to her, “Great is your faith”
What was so great about it?
It wasn’t ordinary faith
It was expectant faith
Persistent faith
Cheerful faith
Dogged faith
Relentless faith
To sum up
Cheerful, Relentless, Expectant faith
This excellent woman exercised her faith
She exhorted Jesus to exorcise her child
“Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.”
But Jesus kept mum
Not a word from the Word made Flesh
Jesus’ disciples whined like puppies
“Send her away, for she keeps shrieking out after us.”
Jesus broke his silence
“It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the pet dogs”
Isn’t He being cruel? Insulting? UnChristian?
Consider the WAY he says it
With a gruff voice and a stern look?
Or, with an inviting voice, and twinkle in his eye?
Like someone playing hard to get?
Like the Bridegroom in the Song of Songs?
His words did not throw her off his trail
With cheerful, relentless, expectant faith she hounded him
“Please, Lord, for even the pet dogs eat the scraps that fall from their Master’s table.”
His joy bubbled up, His eyes lit up
Like a proud Father, he cried,
“O woman, great is your faith!”
“Let it be done for you as you wish.”
And He exorcised her child
Because she’d exercised her faith
Cheerful, relentless, expectant faith[What are you praying for? What have you stopped praying for? Maybe for your relative who’s in an abusive relationship, or who suffers from cancer or depression, or who won’t talk to you anymore. Maybe for your spouse who has major health issues and you take care of your spouse although you weren’t trained to be a home care worker. Maybe for strength as you take care of a child with special needs. Maybe for a job. Maybe for help to quit- smoking, or drinking too much or gambling too much or looking at harmful images online. Maybe you feel like living proof of Murphy’s Law, that everything that could possibly go wrong is going wrong. Whatever it is, whatever you’re praying for or have stopped praying for, Jesus gives you this story of the Canaanite woman today, to encourage you, to excite you, to inspire you to pray like she prayed, with great faith! Pray with me: Jesus, Master, grant me great faith. Give me faith like you gave the Canaanite woman. Cheerful, relentless, expectant faith. So that one day soon I’ll hear you say to me what you said to her: “Let it be done for you as you wish!”]

ABANDONMENT says, “You’re alone, and no one understands”
But Someone *else* cries, “I *do* understand and I won’t leave you”
Then FEAR says, “You’re afraid, don’t ever trust in others’ hands”
But Someone *else* cries, “Trust in Me, don’t let the liar deceive you”Then POW’RLESSNESS claims, “You can’t change it; you’re too weak and hurt”
But Someone *else* cries, “You can’t change it… but *I* can, let Me”
And SHAME claims, “You’re unlovable, just stupid, worthless dirt”
But Someone *else* cries, “You are precious; you fill Me with glee”And HOPELESSNESS states, “Things are stuck and never will clear up”
But Someone *else* cries, “Everything is possible… it’s true”
CONFUSION states, “You do not understand why things erupt”
But Someone *else* cries, “You don’t need to understand, because *I* do”REJECTION says, “You are not loved, or wanted, or desired”
But Someone *else* cries, “I accept you just the way you are”
That Someone is three Persons Who in bapt’sm are acquired
The Trinity deep in your heart… close! rather than afarREJECTION cured by BAPTISM where God bestows acceptance
ABANDONMENT is healed by Jesus in the EUCHARIST
Our POW’RLESSNESS dispelled through CONFIRMATION‘S mighty Presents
And FEAR of trusting others cured by MATRIMONY’S tryst
Our SHAME removed through RECONCILIATION’S absolutions
And HOPELESSNESS is healed by the ANOINTING with bless’d oil
CONFUSION cured through HOLY ORDERS‘ ordered resolutions
These sacraments do cure our wounds and Satan’s plans do spoil
(Poem inspired by this book:)

(Inspired by St. Paul, Beth Lux, and John Harburg)
My vehicle will often stall
I tend to gripe and frown and moan
But many have no wheels at all…So thank You for a car to own
My house has lost its power, Lord
The pipes are froze; there ain’t no heat
But thank You for a place to board…When thousands freeze out on the street
Our church is old and needs repair
How will we raise the funds, Oh Lord?
But thank You for a building where…Our flock can gather to adore
A friend has judged me; I feel blue
Another said some things unfair
But thank You for these friends, though few…Who let me feel Your love and care

Want to see the Father? Look at Christ His Son
Want to hear the Father? Hear His Precious One
Want to taste the Father’s care?
Schedule daily time for prayer
Soak in scripture, silent there
Sin and stress you’ll shunWant to touch the Father? Touch the Risen Lord
Want to hug the Father? It’s not an award
Rather it’s a gift that’s free
Savior’s arms stretched out for thee
His embrace you’ll never flee
Joy will be restoredWant to trust the Father? Heart with fear enticed?
Doubt and painful worry? Put your trust in Christ
Each time Satan give his cue
Says you’re worthless, stupid too
Pray, “Jesus I trust in You!”… He’ll
Crush the devil’s heistWant to know the Father? Get to know His Word
Ask the Holy Spirit – Soon you’ll be assured
As He forms your mind and heart
Lies ’bout God will soon depart
Father-love He will impart
Holy Longing stirred -
Prayer is…
MEETING Jesus heart-to-heart…
before meeting Him face-to-face
SEEING Jesus with eyes of the soul…
before seeing Him with eyes of the flesh
HEARING God with ears of the heart…
before hearing Him with ears of the head
EMBRACING God with arms of faith…
and in the here-and-now, letting the “everlasting arms” embrace you!“The eternal God is your refuge, and his everlasting arms are under you” -Deuteronomy 33:27 New Living Translation (NLT)
-
If some one has died whom you never have met
And you’re at their funeral? You don’t need to fret
Your prayers help prepare them to enter true Joy
Your presence brings comfort to each girl and boy -
A knock on your door? It’s Jesus who’s knocking
Bring food to a food bank? His pantry you’re stocking
A plea for a meal? It’s Jesus who’s pleading
Give food to a child? It’s Jesus you’re feeding
A ring on your phone? It’s Jesus who’s calling
A baby that cries? It’s Jesus who’s bawling
A friend who’s in grief? It’s Christ you console
Your love brings Him joy and He’ll make your joy full
That bread on the altar? It’s Christ in disguise
He’ll feed you and love you and make your heart wise! -
Thanks Lord for letting me scatter Your Word
Thanks in advance for the wat’ring You’ll do
Thanks in advance for the fruit from what’s heard
Help us all fall in love only with You. Amen!
-
Holy Spirit help me preach.
Give me words Your Word to teach.
Every hardened heart do breach,
From them lies and sin impeach.
Fill my heart with love for each,
Confidently I beseech.
Let me preach not just by speech,
But by arms of love that reach.
Amen!
